Proposal Evaluation Meeting for the Supreme People’s Court’s 2025 Major Judicial Research Project: "Research on Legal Liability Determination for Autonomous Driving" Successfully Held

Recently, the Supreme People’s Court successfully held the proposal evaluation meeting in Beijing for its 2025 major judicial research project, "Research on Legal Liability Determination for Autonomous Driving." The meeting was jointly organized by the project’s lead institution, the School of Law at Beijing Normal University, the Dongcheng District People’s Court of Beijing, and Beijing Li Xiang Automobile Co., Ltd.

This research project will bring together a wide range of professional expertise from industry, academia, research institutions, and judicial authorities. It will focus on four major areas: “Review of Domestic and International Research,” “Overall Approach and Framework,” “Core Research Content,” and “Research Methods and Plan.” Systematically examining China’s civil tort liability system and adopting a core approach of “technical facts—legal logic—institutional design,” the project aims to establish a “dynamic tiered system of liability imputation” tailored to automation levels L1 through L5.

This project focuses on the commercialization of autonomous driving and its legal safeguards, closely addressing cutting-edge judicial issues in the field of legal liability determination. It is highly valuable and highly targeted. The research team emphasizes collaboration among industry, academia, and research institutions; it possesses a solid foundation, clear thinking, and scientific methods. The project aligns with China’s practical approach, combining feasibility with innovation, and meets the overall orientation and requirements of the Supreme People's Court's major research projects.
